Sultan al-Nasir Hasan (full name: An-Nasir Badr ad-Din Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Qalawun) ascended the throne at the age of 13 in 748 AH/1347 CE.[1] When he reached maturity in 1350, he arrested the Emir Manjaq who controlled all of the states affairs. Prior to that arrest, the emir was restricted to an allowance of just one hundred dirham per day.
Beautiful mosque especially sultan Hassan... a spacious and calming sanctuary in the city. Expect to pay entrance fee if not Egyptian and tip the person who takes care of the shoes.
Unbelievable to see such an extraordinary historic place like this one. What I have seen there might be one of the most same-state place in islamic history without renovation 😍Recommend every traveler and every tourist from all over the world to come visit Egypt, Cairo and most importantly, Masged Soltan Hassan 😍😍😍
Magnificent building. Very sad that it is not well maintained in terms of cleanliness. Also unfortunate that they allow people who may or may not be employees harass visitors hoping for tips.
80p=€4.5 ticket, students 40. Close at 4:30pmPersonally I found the new mosque inside is better than Suntan Hassan. Sutan Hassan is not really worth coming and this ticket.
Almost 1000 old school and masjed sokrsn Hassan
These are incredible buildings that I would say are a must see. They are huge and magnificent from an architectural perspective. They rival any European cathedrals of the same era. They are rarely visited as most tours go to the better known Mohamed-Ali mosque, so you get to enjoy this wonderful place pretty much on your own. Well worth a visit.
Very beautiful and quiet place you can ever visit 💜
The mosques construction is considered all the more remarkable as it coincided with the devastation wrought by the Black Plague, which struck Cairo repeatedly from the mid-14th century onwards. Its construction began in 1356 CE (757 AH) and work proceeded for three years without even a single day of idleness. In fact, work appears to have continued even up to 1363, even after Sultan Hasans death, before eventually ceasing.[1] An inscription on the mosque notes the name of amir Muhammad ibn Biylik al-Muhsini as the supervisor of the construction of the mosque. Unusually, his name was placed near Sultan Hasans in the inscription, which demonstrates how important the undertaking of the project must have been. The amirs high standing otherwise was another indication of this prestige, as he was appointed governor of Cairo in 1330 and oversaw other construction projects including the renovation of the hippodrome established by al-Zahir Baybars near the Citadel.
Its the best masged you should visit it.
You cannot imagine how is that building huge ,Amazing engineering to built a Mosque and school like that ,you have to visit it
Architectural masterpiece building of old islamic school and mosque
Very spiritual place.. The high ceilings and wide area make you feel more comfortable.. The old and authentic design of musque architecture is amazing.. Even the outer area between As-Sultan Hassan and Ar-Refaaie very confortable and has a different atmosphere with a fresh air even in a very hot days.
Egypt is not only about pyramids. In fact, Cairo was built long after the pyramids. Cairo is an extremely interesting city with his own history and mosques are an important part of this history. Its good to have a guide and remember there is a dress code in mosques for both men and women.
One of the oldest and greatest mosques in Egypt, considered as the fourth pyramid. Its construction began 757 AH/1356 CE with work ending three years later without even a single day of idleness. Also it is designed to include schools for all four of the Sunni schools of thought: Shafii, Maliki, Hanafi and Hanbali.Make sure to have a pic inside the Iwan as It measured 65 cubits, five higher than another notably large mosque, the Iwan of Kusraw at Al-Madain in Iraq.P.S. my pics from there.. have fun😊
One of the most beautiful mosques I visited in Egypt it is identified as mamlalik baheraya mosque, it has 4 minarets one of them fell on the students in Muhammad ali time and the other was removed in the upgrading of the mosque the remaining is two minarets now. It is built by the archetict Baylak as Muhammad ali requested. It has one of the largest gates ever. While Baylak was building the mosque Muhammed ali said I want sth impressive so Baylyk kept thinking until he renovated that gigantic place in the world. You must must visit!! And search for more information on it
This is a mosque and also the place where the 4 islamic school are located. It is very old and architicurally beautiful and breath taking. It makes me sad that this place isnt taken care of as it should be, the carpets are dusty and smelly and bathrooms should be cleaner. This is a place that attracts people who pray several times a day and should be able to serve them and have a presentable picture of the history and country. I also think that authorities should equip it with guides who speak English and different languages to explain and guide the tourists. Finding parking in this area is not easy and wheelchair accessible. It is very close to other attractions and eating places. For ladies, bring a scarf with you, preferably a large one.
Absolutely beautiful mosque. The marble stone work inside is exquisite.
Thank you to all the staff for the good reception and quality of service

The Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan is a monumental mosque and madrasa located in the historic district of Cairo, Egypt. It was built between 1356 and 1363 during the Bahri Mamluk period, commissioned by Sultan an-Nasir Hasan.
A fantastic opportunity. I just wish they would invest more in cleaning the Masjid and upgrade the carpets.
Such a great monument. Worth having a visit
The Pyramid of Islamic Architecture. A unique edifice where every corner and every stone shows unparalleled art💖💖💖💖💖
Extremely beautiful mosque. If you didnt know, the Shah is buried there.
This is a beautiful mosque built during the Mamluk era. It has an extremely spiritual vibe, as well as a uniquely designed entryway and an impressive courtyard. It has many fine-looking lamps Kandil and is a must-see historic site in old Cairo.
The most calm and beautiful mosque in elsayeda Aishas areaYou can mediate there to find your peace
Made Salaah in a piece of history... loved it
Amazing visit for this masgid history
Built between 1356 and 1363 by Cairo’s Mamluk ruler Sultan Hassan, the Sultan Hassan Mosque and Madrassa was designed as a place of worship and madrassa (Islamic school). Visitors can admire its scale and beauty, see its teaching areas (liwans), and view its other highlight: the mausoleum of Sultan Hassan himself.Things to Know Before You Go The Sultan Hassan Mosquewill appeal to history and religious buffs.Dress respectfully to go inside, with shoulders and knees fully covered.Be prepared to remove your shoes and leave them at the entrance.Women should wear a headscarf and a long skirt or long pants.Restrooms are located behind the mosque.
Not much here, mostly an educational institution it does have a couryard style mosque. Would skip it.
A great mosque
Greatest ancient islamic building in the histroy
A place with the fragrance of history, you will wonder while you wandering!Madrasa of Sultan Hassan & the Mosque of Al Rifai both are the same but there are historical and architectural differences. The first one was established about 500 years elder than the second that is why they are mainly different. The second essentially established as a building simulating the other, but the first is still better than the other because its high kinds of architecture it have been built.Whereas the first was dedicated for studying Islamic sciences, the other was for royal familys commands, otherwise its members have rested in peace inside it.Finally, I can promise you that you will enjoy you eyes with unbelievable scenes and refresh your mind to recognize how the historical remains of human are amazing!
Nice experience
Wonderful history
