Historic citadel from the Islamic age, and the french used it when they conquered Egypt as a defence unit against the English fleet from the Mediterranean Sea. It ia built with stones taken from a pharaonic temple as this area doesnt have stones due to muddy land from the Nile river. Rashed is also known by the manufacture of red cuboid rocks made from mud.

Sultan Qaitbay built this Citadel in the 15th century in Rashid to protect the north coast. It was very common in this era to re-use the pillars, bricks and stones of pharaonic temples. That is why when the French campaign invaded this Citadel ( later they named it Fort Julian), they found Rosetta Stone inside the fort.Rosetta Stone was the first Ancient Egyptian bilingual text recovered in modern times by studying it they managed to unlock and understand the hieroglyphs language. Now, you can take some nice photos in there and see the bricks used in Mangonel but other than that there is nothing to do.

It is likely that those in charge of building Tabiya during the Mamluk era had brought it from another place (possibly the Temple of Sais) and used it to build the castle .

Qaitbay Citadel, a famous castle in Alexandria, one of the landmarks of Egypt in general. Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay ordered it to be built at the time of his historic visit to Alexandria in the summer of 1477, and took about two years to build it, and Sultan Qaytbay visited it in 1479 after he built it. Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay was one of the largest sultans of the Mamluk state and the Mamluk state in general rule Egypt for 28 years from 1468 to 1496. The Qaitbay Citadel is considered one of the most important castles in Egypt due to its ancient history and its strong positions against the enemies of Egypt, and today it is considered one of the most important tourist places in Alexandria. The castle is located in the northern side of the city of Rashid in Alexandria, and it is located at a distance of 7 kilometers. The castle is considered one of the largest Egyptian castles, as it is one of the monuments of the Mamluk era that is still present today, and this castle overlooks the Mediterranean coast. On the northern side of the island of Pharos, specifically at the eastern mouth of the port, and the importance of Qaitbay Castle stems from the fact that it was one of the defenses of the Egyptian coasts, in the Mamluk and Ottoman eras.

The Mamluk Sultan Qansuh al-Ghuri took care of the castle, increasing its importance and shipping it with weapons.Description of the castleThis castle takes the shape of a square with an area of 150 m * 130 m surrounded by the sea on three sides, and this castle contains the walls and the main tower in the northwestern side, and the walls are divided into an inner and an external wall, the inner wall includes the army barracks and weapons stores, and the outer wall The castle has defensive towers on all four sides, rising to the level of the wall, with the exception of the eastern wall, which includes defensive openings for soldiers. The main tower in the inner courtyard takes the form of a large square castle with a side length of 30 meters and a height of 17 meters. The castle consists of three square floors, and in the four corners of the tower there are semicircular towers that end on the top with prominent balconies, and these towers are higher than the main tower that includes openings for shooting arrows On two levels, the first floor is occupied by the Citadel Mosque, which consists of a courtyard, four iwans and defensive corridors that allow the soldiers to pass easily during the defense operations of the castle. This mosque had a minaret, but it collapsed recently. As for the second floor, it contains corridors, halls, and internal rooms, and the third floor includes a large room (the seat of Sultan Qaytbay) in which he sits to see the ships on a days march from Alexandria covered by a cross cellar and on this floor there is an oven to prepare wheat bread, as well as a mill for grinding grain for the resident soldiers In the castle. Sultan Qansuh al-Ghuri renewed the castle and increased its garrison, and this castle was neglected during the Ottoman Caliphate period of Egypt. This castle was established by Sultan Al-Malik Al-Ashraf Abu Al-Nasr Qaitbay Al-Mahmoudi in 882 AH / 1477 AD, in place of the ancient lighthouse of Alexandria at the eastern end of Pharos Island in the late Mamluk state, and it is a separate building 150 meters long or less, and consists of three floors, the first floor is square in shape The second is octagonal and the third is circular, and the top of the lighthouse is covered by a dome and above it is a statue of the god Poseidon, the god of the seas and oceans, with the famous triple thorn of the Greeks, and it was decorated with statues of marble. It has a very smooth surface that works as a mirror hanging underneath a bonfire, and reflects the light emanating from the fires along about 20 kilometers into the water to guide the ships coming to Alexandria, and their walls are 4.5 meters thick. The lighthouse was destroyed in an earthquake in 702 AH during the days of King Al-Nasir Muhammad bin Qalawun, who ordered its restoration, but it collapsed after several years until all its parts were destroyed in 777 AH / 1375 AD.When Sultan Qaytbay visited the city of Alexandria in the year 882 AH / 1477 CE, he went to the site of the old lighthouse and ordered to build on its old basis a tower known later as Qalaat or Tabiyyah Qaitbay, and the construction was completed two years after the date of construction, and historical sources indicate that the castle had It was built with some of the ancient stones of the lighthouse that has disappeared, and not in the same place only, and the lighthouse itself was built by some of the ruins of ancient Pharaonic cities such as Memphis and Thebes [1]And because Qaitbay Castle in Alexandria is considered one of the most important castles on the Mediterranean coast, the sultans and rulers of Egypt took care of it throughout the historical ages.In the Mamluk era, we find Sultan Qansuh al-Ghuri who took great care of this castle and increased the strength of its garrison and shipped it with weapons and equipment, and when the Ottomans conquered Egypt, they used this castle as a place for their protection and took care to preserve it and made sects of infantry, knights, artillery and various garrisons to defend it and then defend the Gate of Egypt North Coast. And when the Ottoman Empire weakened, the castle began to lose its strategic and defensive importance due to the weakness of its garrison, and then the French campaign against Egypt led by Napoleon Bonaparte was able to seize it and the city of Alexandria.

And he was buried in his school in the desert in Cairo. Sultan Qaytbay traveled to Alexandria in the month of Rabi al-Awwal in the year 882 AH / 1478 CE, and he headed towards the old lighthouse that was in the hole and ordered that a great tower be built on its basis, and in Shaaban in the year 884 AH / 1479 CE The Sultan traveled again to Alexandria to see the tower he built there and the work had ended. This castle was established to fortify the city of Alexandria and protect it from external aggression, especially from the Ottoman Empire, which began to change the direction of its conquests from Europe to the Islamic East, so Sultan Qaytbay tried to fortify the outposts. Egyptian so he began building many new castles. The castle consists of a rectangular area of 150 mx 130 m surrounded by the sea on three sides, the castle has a main entrance on the southwestern side in the form of two towers in the form of three quarters of the circle and the castle has two defensive ranges, and a mosque has been attached to the castle on the northeastern side consisting of a hall. Unfortunately, the Rosetta Stone has been in Britain since 1802. I hope that the Rosetta Stone will return to its place. This stone tells the story of history. The Tabia was occupied by the French during the French campaign of 1798 until 1801. They called it Tabia Julien. Relative to Napoleons assistant. However, with the advent of the Ottoman and British forces, the French were expelled from Tabia after the Battle of Abu Qir. Also among his unforgettable works, and after the first fire of the Prophet’s Mosque, several buildings and repairs were made to the mosque, the last of which was the building of the Mamluk Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay in the year 881 AH. In the year 886 AH / 1481AD the second fire occurred in the mosque. After the fall of the Abbasid Caliphate in Baghdad in the year 656 AH, Al-Hakam Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah transferred to the kings of Egypt, who were still interested in the architecture of the Prophet’s Mosque. In the late ninth century AH, specifically in Ramadan 886 AH, a fire burned in the Holy Prophet’s Mosque in the last third of the night, when clouds accumulated and thunder took place, and a thunderbolt fell on the main crescent of the lighthouse. And only the inner dome of the Noble Tomb, which worked in the earlier Qaitbay building, and the dome in the courtyard of the mosque were safe from him. Individuals, including the chief muezzin who was struck by a thunderbolt when he was cheering the main lighthouse, died in this incident. The fire came on the roof of the mosque and the bookcases and the Qur’ans in it except what they were able to save. After three days of the fire, Sultan Al-Qaytbay was contacted and informed of what happened to the Holy Mosque, and that happened to him great. He issued orders to make the necessary preparations for the reconstruction of the mosque, and it was built on his hand for the second time in 888 AH.I hope this tabia will be paid more attention.
