Beautiful views from the top of the mountain before heading down to the first Nilometer, the first one is a little bit hidden and you have to go down the stairs to the Nile. The second nilometer is more like a swimming pool and is in the same side of the river but further down to the edge of the island.

Nilometer

Al
Review №14

Nilometer is the name given to the structures - usually staircases or wells - used in ancient Egypt to measure the height of the floods of the Nile river and thus be able to predict the trends of the crops. The original purpose was to obtain information on the income of agricultural activities - which was supposed to be proportionate to the size of the floods - so as to make adequate taxation. The most famous kilometers are found on the Elefantina island (near Assuan), and on the island of Roda (Cairo).

Sorry, the situation of the nilometer is bad, it is higher just below the museum entrance. Your situation is that of an engraved stone

The Nilometer on the island of Elephantine and on the grounds of the Chnum Temple on the eastern bank of the Nile near Aswan was of particular importance to the ancient Egyptians. The exact water levels of the Nile could be read here during the Nile flood. The waterfowl were of great importance for the cultivation of the fields.

Definitely worth a visit. A vast archaeological area, a bit bumpy but fascinating. If you have the time and the possibilities, better inform yourself a little about its history so that you can better understand its importance.

Millennials, already there, during the time of the pharaohs. This place was used to measure the water level of the Nile, therefore the importance of future harvests and therefore the taxes to be collected by the sovereign. Located on the Elephantine Islands
