The future of the airport was in doubt with the opening of Borg El Arab Airport, however in early 2011 the Egyptian Ministry of Civil Aviation announced major plans to overhaul the airport and its facilities to ensure its future as one of the two commercial airports for Alexandria and Nile Delta region. The renovation project is expected to cost US$120 million which will include lengthening the main runway (04/22) by an additional 750m and the construction of a new passenger terminal to replace the existing aging facility. Due to the length of the old runways, the largest aircraft operating into the airport were the Airbus A320-200, Boeing 737-800 and McDonnell Douglas MD-90.
I used to love this airport when it was used for passengers traffic, although it is small but was very close to the city unlike borg el arab HBE airport which is currently in use

Dont fly flyDubai . They had me pay 600 egp for 7 lbs over my carry on.. Wtthen they didnt check to make sure I hade the right visa for India because they were 2 focused on stealing my money ( Im a normal american teacher who was living in Alexandria) I got deported as soon as I got to India from Dubais mistake, and now I sit in flyDubai.. My layover... And they were not even gonna send me to Alexandria. Dubai main terminal did. Now my luggage. All my clothes and journal for the books Im writing.. ( they made me rearrange so I carried to much not knowing what would happen) is missing
