On June 23, 2018, the Supreme Council of Universities approved the report submitted by the competent committee to study the separation of Alexandria University in Matrouh to become an independent university under the name of Matrouh University in light of the availability of the necessary technical, material and human capabilities.The Prime Minister issued a decision at the end of 2018, to establish Matrouh University, based in Matrouh Governorate, to cancel the Alexandria University branch in Marsa Matrouh, and to include its faculties to Matrouh University, namely the faculties of education, desert and environmental agriculture, veterinary medicine, nursing, tourism and hotels, and Riyadh Children, physical education, petroleum and mining sciences, specific education, archeology and languages

Matrouh University is one of the Egyptian public universities. It was established based on the provisions of the Universities Organization Law No. 49 of 1972 and its executive regulations, and Ministerial Resolution No. 1715 of 2018 amending some provisions of the executive regulations of the Universities Organization Law by adding Matrouh University to the universities stipulated in Article 2 of the Universities Organization Law
