The suffering experienced by cancer patients during the eighties and nineties, prompted a group of patriotic Egyptians to think about establishing an association aimed at improving the lives of cancer patients at the Oncology Institute and alleviating their suffering.A group of philanthropists, including doctors, businessmen, and businesswomen, thought of establishing the “Friends of the National Cancer Institute” to ease the financial burdens on the institute. In 1998, the “Friends of the National Cancer Initiative Association” (formerly the Friends of the Cancer Institute Association), a non-governmental organization, was founded. At the time of its establishment, it aimed to contribute to improving the lives of cancer patients at the Oncology Institute, alleviating their suffering through developing facilities, and raising the level of training on a limited scale, which had a major role in improving the outcomes of treatment for children with cancer at the National Cancer Institute.The late professor of oncology, Dr. Reda Hamza, director of the Oncology Institute at the time, was the first president of the association, and among the founders of the association were a group of doctors from the National Cancer Institute, and a group of businessmen and women in society, such as: Engineer Hossam Qabbani, Professor Muhammad Moheb, and Dr. Sherif Abul-Naga, Ms. Somaya Aboul-Enein, Ms. Suhair Farghali, Ms. Fikri Abdel Hamid, Ms. Ola Ghabbour, who assumed the position of Secretary-General of the 57357 Hospital Foundation, and contributed her effort in collecting donations and development projects, Dr. Manal Zamzam, Professor at the Oncology Institute, and the Canadian nurse, Ms. Patricia Proudhon .Since the beginning of its formation in 1998, the association succeeded in supporting the National Cancer Institute with equipment, experts and projects worth 20 million pounds, such as: developing the pediatric department, establishing the first clinical pharmacy in Egypt, an outpatient clinic for children, establishing two radiology laboratories, establishing genetic and microbiological laboratories, and developing a blood bank program As well as the outpatient clinic, which receives hundreds of cancer patients daily to make the dream come trueThe association also supported the hospital in its infancy, and the association was responsible for issuing tenders and implementing the design, construction, electrical and mechanical works, interior decoration and equipment and collecting donations.The Childrens Cancer Hospital becomes the largest hospital in the Middle East and Africa for treating childrens cancer.The Societys efforts continued to support its largest projects so far, in addition to its support and sponsorship of many other projects that contribute to eradicating the cancer of poverty, the cancer of ignorance, the cancer of disease.
