This Islamic architectural masterpiece was the home of a rich family from Crete. There are actually two medieval houses, joined together, restored and refurnished by Major Gayer-Anderson, an Englishman who lived in them from 1935 to 1942.The houses are well preserved and give a good idea about the level of luxury and comfort that could be attained by wealthy people of Cairo about three hundred years ago.Major Gayer Anderson was a great collector of Oriental art and the main pieces of his collection are on display in various thematic rooms, named according to the origin of the exposed artifacts: Persian, Byzantine, Egyptian, Chinese, Indian, Syrian (or Damascus Room) and so on.The light, filtered through mashrabiya windows, creates a magic ambiance all over the place. The polychrome fountain, Ottoman tiles, alcoves, multicolor cushions, richly decorated ceiling beams and coffee tables give visitors the feeling of Oriental movie stage.Even a few scenes from a James Bond series movie were shoot here.

A very nice experience to visit this amazing museum and house. I spent like 1 and half an hour inside enjoying the place details.P.S. there are limited parkings for cars.

The house is very nice as are the collections from around the world. Unfortunately, our experience wasnt great because the ticket seller asked for a 10 pound tip because I got a student/teacher discounted ticket and was then forced getting the guide. When we said that we wanted to go alone he said he had to come to turn on the lights. He then continued to give a full tour despite our request. It was a frustrating experience. Pictured here is the guide waiting to take people around. Btw, he is nice and informative but at times he would whisper information to and not my girlfriend (such as Gayer Anderson bring gay), which seemed odd. Again, we just wanted to enjoy the place on our own.

In my way to Gayer-Anderson Museum 😉 In Arabic بيت الكريتلية او متحف جاير أندرسونThe building takes its name from Major R.G. Gayer-Anderson Pasha, who resided in the house between 1935 and 1942 with special permission from the Egyptian Government. The museum is noted for being one of the best-preserved examples of 17th-century domestic architecture left in Cairo, and also for its vast collection of furniture, carpets, curio, and other objects.

Outstanding museum, they have more artefacts than they know where to put. You will see things from Egypt, Persia, China, and India. The entire house is still furnished with the original antiques Major Anderson brought. Its just phenomenal.

A gem that mustnt be left out when visiting Cairo. One star deducted as even in this little haven a guide basically forces his presence on visitors just to be able to hassle them for some money.

The Gayer-Anderson Museum is located adjacent to the Mosque of Ibn Tulun off of Abd al-Magid al-Labban (Al-Salbiyya) Street in Sayyida Zeinab, Cairo. It is most conveniently reached by taxi. The nearest station on the Cairo Metro, the Sayyida Zeinab station, is approximately 1 km to the west. The museum entrance can be reached through the main entrance to the mosque, or through a separate entrance toward the rear of the complex. As of January 2020, entrance fees were LE 60 for foreign adults, LE 30 for foreign students, and LE 10 for Egyptian nationals. A camera ticket costs an additional 50 pounds although mobile phone camera photos are allowed at no additional charge.

The Gayer-Anderson Museum is one of the best-preserved buildings of 17th-century, so its architecture is really unique and worths the visit. It also has a big collection of furniture, carpets and other objects, organised in the rooms to show the folklore traditional art of the ottoman era.Be careful at the entrance! The fee is 60 LE per person, included photos with mobile phone. You have to pay more only if you want to use a camera to take photos!

Very nice place to visit but should be avoided during hot weather as there no ventilation method inside also not recommended for people with medical conditions.Expect that you will be going up and down some high stairs during the visit. Ask for someone to explain the background of the house owner as there are not any labels in the house and do not miss going up to the roof there you can take the best photos.

It is so wonderful to discover this awesome place. I have been there for almost two times and every time I have got a chance to experience it differently. The tickets price is so cheap for Egyptian, it’s for free if you are a student tho. The good thing about it is you can witness a different ancient architecture style and walk through the history.Highly recommend!

This is a great museum and there are a lot of things you can see this museum. Even though you would be tired from visiting the next door Ibn Tulun Mosque I would highly recommend seeing this place. You can do it at your own pace and there are many rooms in this museum to see and each have their unique things to see. If you have the Cairo pass then you dont pay the entry fee but you will have to pay to take photos. If our dont want to pay for the photo pass just dont take photos at the ground level and the levels above are fine. There are museum care takers who will show and explain the different rooms and best to pay them a little token upfront. James Bonds Spy Who Loved Me was shot in one of the terraces. There is also a secret hidden room which is impossible to find unless the caretakers show it to you. Please dont miss and go at your own pace, and there are stairs to climb to visit each room.

It is an oasis of serenity in this megalopolis chaos!Apparently the guided visit is short, so DYI !I love the architecture, the artifacts, the garden and the book/gifts shop. The tales of the kritlia book is great! The house had been associated to some interesting fairy tales:)
