What an amazing experience we had visiting this monument! This experience was beyond my expectations. Due to the fact that we travel often, we tend to feel like some monuments resemble each other a lot which may make the experience less exciting. But this is a monument that you just must see. I very glad I had this experience on my itinerary.Inside the monument is just as amazing as outside. They have thought of every single thing to enhance this beautiful site! Very impressive!
The Citadel of Saladin is basically a huge castle located in what is now central Cairo on a hill that overlooks the city. Within the walls of the citadel youll find four large mosques, five useums a theater and a park. All very impressive. You can spend the whole day just touring the Citadel itself. I would recommend not skipping it, but at the same time pick the places that you really wanna visit.
Very nice historic site to take the family and kids to learn about their Islamic heritage and many of the ruling kings and leaders of Egypt throughout history. It is a huge place so be ready to walk and take some water if you are planning on taking the kids because once you enter it is about 5k before there is a snack shop.
Very beautiful and historical place, situated on high hill overlooking the whole city of Cairo, the place is a historical complex containing the remains of Salahuddin Ayyubi castle, the national military and police museums, historical mosque of Nasser Mohammad Kawloun and most notably the mosque of Mohammad Ali Pasha, the ticket is super cheap, it’s only 2.5$(1.3$ if you’re student in Egypt) for all of the activities above and it’s so worth it, probably the nicest spot you can go to in the whole of Cairo, and Rifai mosque is within walking distance, i highly recommend it.
In short, yes. You should visit it.Salah Al Din Citadel is one of the most slept on tourist spots in Cairo. It’s full of history, has great stories, and is a great way to spend an hour or two.Aside from the history of the citadel, the beautiful Muhammad Ali pasha mosque is the highlight.Note: The citadel is located on a hill, so if you’re unfit or have any difficulties walking, you may have trouble reaching and moving up some uneven stairways.5/5 starsFor more food and reviews, follow me on Instagram @yamisohungry (food!) and @yamisosleepy (life!)
The Citadel of Cairo or Citadel of Saladin is a medieval Islamic-era fortification in Cairo, Egypt, built by Salah ad-Din (Saladin) and further developed by subsequent Egyptian rulers. It was the seat of government in Egypt and the residence of its rulers for nearly 700 years from the 13th to the 19th centuries. Its location on a promontory of the Mokattam hills near the center of Cairo commands a strategic position overlooking the city and dominating its skyline. At the time of its construction, it was among the most impressive and ambitious military fortification projects of its time. It is now a preserved historic site, including mosques and museums.
As I have a love for the history of this region I had to go and see the Citadel that Saladin had built this imposing structure looming over old Cairo. It has been improved and added to as control of Cairo Egypt has changed hands over the Centuries. I was particularly interested to see the site where the Mamluk massacre took place but unfortunately that are is closed. The Egypt military museum is closed you can walk around the out side which has a collection of old Amoured vehicles, Planes, SAM batterys & Radar. Tucked away in the corner is a Diorama of the Egyptian Engineers using water cannons to break down the Sand wall along the Suez cannal. Well played. I must admit it is run down and many areas a closed it is still worth going and having a look at. Even if its only for the view of Cairo.
This is a historical place that you must visit in Cairo.such a great mosq and citadel wz lots of nice colors and old patterns. The working hours from 9-5 , I recommend that you got a comfortable shoes and bring yr water wz you.You MUST MUST make sure to go to WC before this visit as no clean place or WC there.Wear your hat and sunglasses and enjoy. What I also discovered that in night there is a lot of parties might happen thier and even private events like weddings however wz special authority approvals.
Egypt is not only about pyramids. The Citadel is a fortress built by Saladin, one of the most important people in islamic history (and in world history, you may know him from the movie Kingdom of Heaven). A guide will tell you many stories about Saladin, his fortress and Islam (you may find out things you didnt imagine). There is a beautiful panorama of Cairo from the fortress - we were told on some days you could see the pyramids from there but we werent that lucky.
Its beautiful place to visit and to go through the history. Every angle and corner has its own inspiration and magic. I would give this place 5 stars but because of the people at the entrance keep begging to buy from them and also because the lady who works at the lady bathroom asked me for tip I rated this place as 4 stars.
The place is amazing and the roof is mind blowing. The biggest issue, like in all museums and historic places in Cairo, there are no guiding information and descriptions provided and you must have a tour guide. Unfortunately tour guides are not organized and they are arbitrary. They are not officials in these places and the information they provide can not be trusted.
I’m fascinated by this place, love it! But I would love to have some cafe or restaurants inside. At least to be able to sit down and enjoy the view. There was only one restaurant which had been some companies presentation and another one next tot the military museum which didn’t have food / meal to order
The place is amazing for sure. It gives real historic vibes and pride. All the positive review for the place, views, cleanliness, well-preserved monuments and organisation. Unfortunately AlGawhara Palace was under maintenance (where Muhammad Ali Pasha lived) so I couldnt enter. I only have 1 negative point about the parking lot. Its only for tourist buses. We had to park our car all the way down the road, and came back up the hill walking. I hope they consider a good location for car parking, even though its already there but closed.
Absolutely fantastic. Amazing architecture and workmanship that has lasted centuries. They dont build like this anymore which is a shame. Spectacular history on display. Definitely needs to be on your bucket list.
The Citadel was built on a promontory beneath the Muqattam Hills, a setting that made it difficult to attack. The efficacy of the Citadels location is further demonstrated by the fact that it remained the heart of Egyptian government until the 19th century.[3] During this long period, the layout and structure of the Citadel was repeatedly altered and adapted to suit the designs of new rulers and new regimes, which makes it difficult to reconstitute its original plan or even its plan in subsequent periods
-All history in one place, definitely i will visit this place again- police museum and army museum in the same place- make sure to have Guide when you visit this place ( I recommend Hassan - speaks Arabic/English /Italian) With tourist guide you will know all details about this place- Usually all guides in the entrance available for many languages- make sure to visit ((Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan)) after finish from this place (10-15 minutes by walk )
You need about two hours to visit. On entrance you need to pay entrance fee i and fee for camera. It is free of charge to take photos with phone. Inside is couple of beautiful mosques, with beautiful candelabras and great view on Cairo. You need to pay 5 eg. pounds for shoe covers.
Really is a Wonderful and more safe really amazing and u can see the old Egypt from the top and see the Pyramids Borj Cairo and all the really amazing and it’s to close to everything Museum / mosques / Downtown / I really see lots of old things / I recommend for everyone must be go to the salah al din ayoubi castle
Beautiful. Words cant quite capture the dignified magnificence of the Mosque. One of the better sites in Cairo. The Panoramic view from the top is simply breathtaking.A must view of ever you are on a trip to Cairo. The pricing at the entrance is fair. EGP180 for foreigners and 30 for Egyptians.A must see in Cairo
I wondered were should l better be for 6 of October and this place came to my mind. The military museum part is renowned and looks amazing, while the view from the mosque is so peaceful.
A big area to explore but certainly worth every minute. Comparing and contrasting the two amazing mosques inside is a great activity
A wonderful place, you can stroll around, enjoy the view of Cairo (its very high up) and visit the various historical landmarks within its walls.

Citadel itself is nice. Interior, maybe one of the most impressive sceneries inside of mosque which I have visited till now. The garden very nice. Also, backyard has amazing view on the entire Cairo and Giza, above all you can see Pyramids. But, there is no much history explained, no museum works there. I dont understand what the ticket is paid for.
Beautiful view and museums the price for the entry was 180 egp and 90 egp if you are a student but you need to provide ID everything is included museums and temples be carefull the photograph guys.
An amazing place to visit! It is really nice but you should go with time because has so many beautiful spots to take pictures and appreciate the area. There is a Mosque inside the plates that you can take some free books to learn and understand better about the Islam religious . It was one of the best placed in Cairo
The citadel is an interesting place to visit for sure. If you come to Cairo you should definitely come have a look. The price, maintenance and organization of the place are a bit disappointing though. The ticket is 180 EGP for foreigners. There are supposed to be 4 museums inside but, when we visited in November 2020, 3 of them were closed (just the police museum was open). On top of that the level of maintenance of the place is really poor. Theres trash everywhere and a lot of old buildings that are falling apart. They should really clean the place and fix the buildings, including the wooden structures in the main garden in front of the mosque that are falling to the floor. The thing that most disturbed me was that I tried to go to the toilet and I got asked for money to enter. Isnt 180 EGP enough to use the toilet??? Its just unbelievable. The mosque of Mohamed Ali is beautiful but needs some cleaning too. The alabaster is brown rather than white...
Visited the castle during the Arab Music Festival, the light works were amazing. Had a great time
First of all the view from up here is beautiful. Of course you have to take off your shoes,if you wanna go in and please dress respectfully. You only need to cover your hair if there is prayer going on otherwise you can walk in without a headcover, but again out of respect maybe you wanna wear it. Fridays at noon there is the Friday prayer going on so if you show up at that time it might be crowded and you will not be able to take a look of the inside.
Wonderful land mark at the center of Cairo. Historical amazing site that is a mix of ancient and old architecture. Great walls and preserved old buildings. There is Salah El Din Al Ayouby Citadel, Mohammed Ali Mosque, The Military Museum, the police museum.. all these sites in one place. It is highly recommendable to visit this site.
One of the most beautiful places youll visit on a trip to Cairo, Egypt. It has Amazing architecture and its pretty well looked after for the most part. Its quite a large place so be prepared to walk around a fair bit and bring with you some snacks and water as there isnt too many options inside. Take plenty of photos and dont be shy to ask for a guide and bombard them with questions. I visited this place 3 times in my visits to Cairo.
Salah El-Din Castle is one of the most important landmarks in Islamic Cairo, and one of the most luxurious military castles built in the Middle Ages. Its strategic location on the top of Mokattam Mountain provided a wonderful view of all the landmarks of historical Cairo. The impenetrable walls around the Islamic capitals of Egypt with the castle provided more protection against the siege. Salah began The Ayyubid religion in the construction of this castle on the Mokattam mountain (572-579 AH / 1171-1193 AD) in a place that was known as the Air Dome, but he did not complete it in his lifetime, and Sultan al-Kamil bin al-Adil completed it (604 AH / 1207 AD), who was the first to inhabit it and made it a home for the king. And it remained the seat of the rule of Egypt until the reign of Khedive Ismail, who transferred the seat of government to Abdeen Palace in the Khedive Cairo area in the mid-nineteenth century. The castle witnessed many historical events from the time of the Crusades until the end of the Muhammad Ali family (1220-1264 AH / 1805-1848 AD).
As an Egyptian tour guide I want to tell you small fact about this place .The citadel is the ruling place of Egypt for more than 800 years .You can see a panoramic view of all Cairo from the citadel .
I can never stop going to this place, and every time i take same photos and every time different passion and different enjoyment. Its a must visit whatever you are a tourist or living Egypt. They open from 8:00 a lot of scenes to check inside. An Army museum, Mohammed Ali Mosque and more. There is also a panoramic view for cairo. All photos are taken by me.
I dont know where to begin. the ancient 10 meters-tall walls or the astonishing mosque with its marble from the outside and the extremely complex decorations from the inside or the astounding view of cairo from the mosques garden. Really its worth a visit
A great example of medieval fortresses in Cairo. The site needs a bit of TLC to be top-notch, such as better washrooms and better signage with information about the buildings for visitors. The 2 mosques should not be missed by visitors. The small Police Museum is worth a quick visit as well; there are some interesting pieces in there! Avoid the Citadel on Friday after prayer as it tends to be way too crowded.

To begin with the fact that Im lucky to be an Egyptian lady, Im really fond of Egyptian ancient history and everything about my country. Sightseeing historic places warm my heart and make me feel really elated and excited. The place there is amazing, you can see the whole Cairo city from up there, I even saw the pyramids from up there which are in Giza ! and its not even that high as a building. Undoubtedly, the structure of the building was planned by a clever engineer. The citadelle is in the same place as the Masjid AKA mosque of Muhammad Ali and the military museum ,which gives you an opportunity to visit the three of them. It was an awesome experience and I actually went there more than once because everything about the place is remarkable. You will need at least 4 hours to roam the whole 3 places ,enjoy sightseeing and take pictures of yourself and certain sights because the camera is not permitted in all areas.
Saladin Citadel of Cairo is a medieval Islamic fortification in Cairo, Egypt. The location, on Mokattam hill near the center of Cairo, was once famous for its fresh breeze and grand views of the city. It is now a preserved historic site, with mosques and museums. It has 2 gates, 3 towers, 4 palaces, 5 Mosques and 6 museums.Construction started 1176, completed and opened 1183.
A place of history. Has two large mosques in it. Mohammed Alis mosque is really beautiful in the inside. Red carpeted and well-lit. The place has two museum too; the military and the police museums. Currently the military museum is closed for renovation. The police museum has a lot of antiquities of the past. From swords, police regalia, prisons, guns (the kind they use in pirate movies), old news papers of important events. The place has a lot to see. Best to go in the morning.
If the government would clean this place or at least maintain it, it would be a solid 4 star attraction. Instead, its dusty and crumbling. The view is great on a clear day - most days you can just make out the pyramids through the haze. There are a couple of museums here, including the police museum and the armed forces museum. There is an old mosque and the Muhammad Ali mosque, which can be seen from afar.As is typical, Arabs pay 20LE admission while foreigners pay 150LE.If this review was helpful, please click Like!
Although I am a 41 Years old Egyptian who have visited Salah Al Din Citadel few times in my life, but today’s visit was really outstanding by all means. My family and I really enjoyed every step in our tour today and everyone we met today (all Egyptians of course). What made this visit really special is the tour guide who have inspired us with lots of information about the great history of this amazing country, my country . . EGYPTHighly recommended to visit this place and more importantly with a tour guide!
A must see place in Cairo. The citadel itself, mosques and the museums inside are unique. Ticket price for foreigners is 180 EGP and for Egyptians/ Arabs is only 30 EGP. Such variation in entry ticket price is not found any other international tourist spots, at least Ive never seen.
Very historic place, monuments are masterpiece in itself. Several Mosques and towers are eye catching with its beauty. The enchanting mosque of Mohammed Ali is the must visit place for its marvelous architectural work, the mosque stands in 4 pillars which symbolise four seasons, the height is 52 meters which is about the weeks per year and inside it has 365 lamps which depicts the number of days in a year. Beside these, the police and military museums are best in its class and there is so much to look for. Old tanks, fighter jets, helicopters and military statues are some best place to go. From the citadel, whole of Cairo city can be seen as it is located on top of the mountain. For international tourists, the entrance ticket is 140 EGP and 20 EGP for locals, will have to remove your shoes while entering the mosques or buy a plastic cover with 5EGP. The guides are available with good nature unlike the pyramids, but be ready to negotiate at first. Restaurants available inside, keep yourself hydrated.
