What words can explain the feeling you get standing just 50 or so yards away from one of the recognized moments in the world. My daughters were over come with excitement truing to kiss the Sphinx. Learning about the Sphinx does not compare to the experience of being here. Please. They Egyptian people are amazing. If you get a chance come visit this amazing country.
We were left speechless at the entire Giza complex. It’s amazing you can freely just walk around and explore it! We spent 4 hrs and walked 10km! We walked everywhere as you could clearly see that the horses and camels are in bad shape and we saw many handlers abusing them! Just walk around and enjoy it by foot!
You cant explain what it feels like to stand in front of ancient masterpieces until youre there. Ive seen pictures and documentaries of The Great Sphinx throughout my life, alongside the Pyramids and Egyptian wonders in general- but nothing- not a single things compares to being there in person. It was worth the 42 years of wait!
Visiting Giza is every but as magical as you would expect. It was definitely a bucket list place for me and did not disappoint. There is a lot of walking to see the pyramids and the Sphinx but is worth it. I was not going to ride the camels because it seemed like a very touristy thing to do. I changed my mind and had a blast. Id recommend a little time spent on a camel.
Breathtaking piece of history like no other, the energy you could feel when you are walking in the desert knowing that ancient egyptians were there too is enough to get an experience. The BIG downside is the lack of organisation and rules reinforcement. At the entrance it is very crowded and when it comes to buying tickets people are pushing around and cutting lines without anyone organising anything. Very very dirty due to the horses and camels pooping on the floor and no one cleaning it. All in all you must visit but be prepared for some unusual sights which is also part of the egyptian experience 🤷♂️😌
The place is great but it needs some orgnazingticket man tock from me more money than supposed to beand no information or plane or map or suggestionthe place is some thing unbelievable amazing Realy but in other handyou will see many homeless dogsand also people inside they trying to force use to hire camels or horses or asking for money I think I faced tens of them.the place is great but it must be more organized
Sphinx and the great Piramids of Giza are always have been and will always be welcoming the tourists & visitors that come from all over the world to witness this fascinating civilization which took place thousands of years ago on the banks of the Nile to teach the world thier magnificent science، buildings & knowledgeOne of the most famous Sphinx
Always loved the ancient culture of Egypt. It was something out of the extraordinary to being able to see it in real.Would be a completely marvellous and unblemished experience if it wasn’t for the hassle and harassment especially at the entrance.Otherwise, get yourself a camel 🐪 (cuz you can ride a horse elsewhere) and go for a ride to feel the energy of this spectacular place. It’s something you’ll remember for life. 😊👍
Maybe a little smaller than expected. Nevertheless, an absolute must if you are visiting the Giza plateau. I visited a little before closing (closes at 1600) and there were lots of visitors. Good pictures available if you stand by the road on the right and catch the camels and horses leaving the site at the end of the day.
The Great Sphinx of Giza one the wonders that had the minds of many scientists and Egyptologists. You have to visit the Great Sphinx of giza if you want to visit Egypt. Also go inside the great giza pyramids to check how huge and unique are them. And always remember Egypt is safe and will always be.Have a safe day and a happy life 😊From Egypt with live ❤
The view is insane-its must be on the to do list once in a life.A place full of history indeed. There are also tourists and groups of tourists that ghater all in the same places, local guides giving all the same info about the temples-thats a little bit annoying to hear three different men talking about the same thing each one in his own style of yelling.Another minus is the exit path that is full of local merchandisers trying to make you buy smth for 1$.All in all,the place is a must once in your life.
Was an excellent experience. The boy who led the private tour had some knowledge about the site. It was my first time riding a camel, which also was exciting. I did manage to get up close to see the different stones used to build them.
Picturesque but not as imposing as you’d expect. it was disrespected as a by-attraction after seeing the pyramids when it should be given it’s own glorious attention . You can’t get too close so have a good camera handy for photographs. The locals were helpful with taking photographs with iconic poses but most just wanted to be compensated in return. Don’t ask for the favours, let them offer instead and you need not part with a penny. Worth ticking off the list of must sees.
Great monuments about old kingdom. The place is near to Cairo and esaly accessible. Sourranding the Sphinx unfortunately the area is not very clean and well organized. You find A lot of turist and several busses and cars. I advise to hire a guide to undertstand at the best the history of the egyptians kingdom.
One of the best world heritage historical sites in the world. Its a place you must visit. The great Sphinx of Giza the largest ancient statue in the world cut if a single piece of rock!!!
Visit once in your lifetime it worthwhile being there watching the Great Sphinx with face of man , head of woman and body of lion. Its a very unique experience overall which you wont find anywhere on this planet.Taking a horse ride or your own vehicle will add a cherry on your Giza itinerary.Make sure you dont fall prey to vendors inside because they demand ransom high prices for their local products. If you are interested in taking pictures of those ancient structures then take some pictures just at the entrance posing with different styles. And when you are done come out and search for some stores with real papyrus paintings theyre good to buy as a souvenir for family at home.Overall 10 on 10.
A good ancient place to visit. Beware of all cons who are around this area to loot foreigners. The actual price is hiked as soon as they see foreigners. Other than this this place is amazing. Very well preserved
Fantastic place and mesmerizing to even think of this structure being over 4000 years old. Completely agree it to be wonders if the world. But the experience is totally run down by the locals pestering you to buy goods, or take camel rides or simply ask for tips. They refuse to take a NO as an answer and too many of them running after you one by one. They wouldnt even listen to the Arabic speaking guide who was with us !!!
Go early and be prepared for a crowd. We arrived just before a large group of tourist arrived and I felt like they were scared the Sphinx was going to run away, interfering in photo opportunity and almost pushing. I understand the excitement because I too REALLY wanted to see it but other people can ruin it very easily for someone not prepared for large groups (or simply hates them like myself).
I give it only 3 stars because the place is full of very dodgy characters who are constantly approaching you with their help. Forget about peaceful contemplation, because these locals wont leave you alone. Also the place has no cafes so take your coffee with you. This aside, the sphinx and pyramids are WOW! A must see if you are in Cairo
Current hours as of June 2021- opens at 8am. Go right in the beginning when it’s the cooler time of the day, you will have the pyramids to yourself. The whole complex is walkable, make sure to bring water and a hat. Hiking gives you an opportunity to take the time to soak it in. We took our time, and spent 2 hours there. Occasional breeze was a delight. Don’t let the weather report scare you away from visiting in June/July.
The Great Pyramid of Giza is a huge pyramid built by the Ancient Egyptians. ... It is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one to remain mostly intact. When it was built it was 146.5 metres (481 feet) tall. It was the tallest building in the world for over 3,800 years.
5000 years of history under your feet, feels like eternity is here. I took a horse cart for two of us. For one and a half hour we have paid 20$ total. It took us around the pyramids and stopped and waited for us whenever we asked him. But to be honest you don’t need that horse or camel, because the place itself is wonderful when you walk around. Just take your time, even spend at least a half day here. You can actually take with yourself some snacks so that if you get tired and hungry, sit down and enjoy the view
Beautiful. Some conservation and restoration work going on but the artwork is fascinating as is the attached temple. An essential visit of in the area.
Its such a beautiful place to visit. The Giza Pyramid Complex, also called the Giza Necropolis, is the site on the Giza Plateau in Greater Cairo, Egypt that includes the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, along with their associated pyramid complexes and the Great Sphinx of Giza. All were built during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of Ancient Egypt, between 2600 and 2500 BC. The site also includes several cemeteries and the remains of a workers village. Its a dream place to visit.
The Sphinx is a statue of a mythical creature with a lions body and a human head, carved from limestone, and it is likely that it was originally covered with a layer of plaster and colored, and traces of the original colors are still visible next to one of its ears. Located on the Giza plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt, the Great Sphinx is also the guardian of the plateau
It was an honor to be here on the continent of Africa. I couldnt believe I was there. Its great to be able to visit an ancient part of history, still so well preserved. I had a great tour guide who was very knowledgeable of the place and Egypt. He took great pictures of me and helped keep the hagglers away. It was 200 Egyptian Pounds to enter which is about $12.75. It was very clean and safe to visit. I hope to be able to come back again.
Still there. :-) A fairly quick visit after the pyramids. You cant get super close (touching) like you can at the pyramids.
The Great Sphinx of Giza, commonly referred to as the Sphinx of Giza, Great Sphinx or just the Sphinx, is a limestone statue of a reclining sphinx, a mythical creature with the head of a man, and the body of a lion.Facing directly from west to east, it stands on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt. The face of the Sphinx appears to represent the pharaoh Khafre.
The Sphinx, The Father of Horror, guardian of the pyramids is a great and powerful monument of the pyramids complex.Entrance close at 16:00Better visit before noon for better photos.
The Sphinx was carved during the reign of King Khafre (about 2525 - 2532 BC), owner of the second pyramid of Giza. The Sphinx and its temple in front of it is located directly next to the Wadi Khafre temple and the lower part of the ascending road leading to its mortuary temple and the pyramid. Careful archaeological analysis revealed that the Wadi Temple was finished before work began on the Sphinx and its temple, while analysis of the Sphinx’s facial features revealed striking similarities. With the statues of King Khafre, the Sphinx captured the imagination of travelers and explorers for thousands of years, even in ancient Egyptian times. During the Eighteenth Dynasty (1550-1295 BC. M.) it became seen as a manifestation of the sun god and was called Hor Makht Horus in The horizon and built by King Amenhotep II (about 1427-1400 BC)
Use the entrance by Marriott to enter and buy ticket. Other entrance is very crowded and people rush the counter with only one person inside to help 30 people rushing to buy ticket. Once you enter a lot of space to move around. People will try to sell camel and horse ride but other than it was a good experience.
Cut from the bedrock, the original shape of the Sphinx has been restored with layers of limestone blocks. Its nose is broken. It measures 73 m (240 ft) long from paw to tail, 20 m (66 ft) high from the base to the top of the head and 19 m (62 ft) wide at its rear haunches. It is the oldest known monumental sculpture in Egypt and one of the most recognisable statues in the world. The archaeological evidence suggests that it was created by ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom during the reign of Khafre (c. 2558–2532 BC)The Sphinx is a monolith carved from the bedrock of the plateau, which also served as the quarry for the pyramids and other monuments in the area. Egyptian geologist Farouk El-Baz has suggested that the head of the Sphinx may have been carved first, out of a natural yardang, i.e. a ridge of bedrock that had been sculpted by the wind. These can sometimes achieve shapes which resemble animals. El-Baz suggests that the moat or ditch around the Sphinx may have been quarried out later to allow for the creation of the full body of the sculpture.(Wikipedia)
Well, this is what everyone comes for, and for good reason! This site, with the Sphinx and the Pyramids, is unbelievable. While it can be very crowded, particularly near the Sphinx, and it is hard to get a head on view of it, you must visit this site. Don’t worry if you can’t make the laser light show on the pyramids at night - it isn’t anything special and apparently hasn’t changed one bit in 10-15 years. Regardless, there isn’t much you could do to turn anyone away from this site, as it is simply a must-see on everyone’s bucket list.
The Great Pyramid of Cheops will tell about herself - the main thing is to find the strength to reach it. I will only give recommendations for those who decided to enter the pyramid of Cheops: wear comfortable shoes, jeans and light clothing. You will have to walk, bent over a narrow corridor, and this path is like a small conquest of a mountain. Inside the camera of Pharaoh you will find an atmosphere similar to a sauna, so do not rush - go quietly and with respect to history and Pharaoh. Then the visit to the pyramid will be pleasant and will be remembered for a lifetime ... by the way, its better to go back down the gallery corridor with your back - your legs go faster and it is more convenient to move ...
Was overall satisfied with the experience and glad that I went and saw it, though the entire time people were trying to con me out of my money literally the whole day. I’ve never had a worse experience as a tourist
Amazing monument. But too many sellers pestering. The persistent harassment from street sellers everywhere we went in Egypt was most unpleasant. I bet Charles and Camilla didnt get this. When you have said no two or three times, why wont they go away?
The Great Sphinx of Giza as probably everybody knows, is a giant statue of a reclining sphinx, a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human. It’s always been a bucket list item of mine and even you’re there seeing it in person, it certainly feels like a bucket list item. Personally I thought you’d get better pictures further away than when you’re close up.Another bucket list item ticked off.
Still not clear to me the meaning of the Sphinx. All I read was confusing as it is evidently a mythical figure with the head of a human that many think it was Khufus. The point is that, the statue is worth to see and admire for a while. But read before you come here. It will give you a good sense of what you are looking at.
Perhaps one of the oldest and most recognizable images of the representative of the cat family and all that were ever born on our planet. A wonderful creation of human hands, just as wonderful and ineptly spoiled by the same human hands. One of the many monuments of human stupidity and cruelty. Nevertheless, it is beautiful!
Although the great sphinx is about 20 meter or 62 feet high from base to the top of the head, from the viewing point, it looks smaller. It would have been nicer if tourists were allowed to go closer for a better grasp of the details.Nonetheless, it is an amazing experience to see it up close. You can take a car or horse carts to reach there as walking in the desert under the sun might be difficult for some.
Great Monuments. Its real wonders of the world. You need three hours to see all the things. Great experience to going inside of great pyramid. Heavy trafic and dusty city. You can do bargain from work to 1. Do not go with arrange tour. Sound and light show is not up to the mark. Dogs and prayer sound from loud speakers from nearby masjid disturbed the programs. Security guard also demand money.
While seeing the sphinx was magnificent, I took issue with the vendors. While most are pushy, in this case, one grabbed the phone out of my travel partners hands and started ordering me to pose even when I told him I didnt want to. As a result of being frustrated with him, we left without getting our pictures (or paying him... Maybe hell learn his lesson). Strongly suggest not paying them a single dollar (he had the nerve to demand 20) if they are too pushy or dont do what you want.
9 expert tips for visiting Egypt’s Giza pyramidsSee Egyptian ancient wonders like a pro with these need-to-know tipsTHE SPHINX AND GREAT PYRAMID OF GIZASouth-west of Cairo on the Nile’s west bank, Giza – if you haven’t already been – is likely on your bucket list. Home to Egypt’s famous sights such as the Sphinx and, of course, the Great Pyramid of Giza, there’s a lot to take in – and equally just as much to miss without the right tips or guidance.1. Get all the right tickets. There’s a general ticket giving access to the pyramids complex, but that won’t get you everywhere – which not everyone is aware of. If you don’t want to miss out on anything, make sure to purchase the additional tickets that allow extra access, such as inside the pyramids and entry to the Solar Boat Museum.2. Hire the right guide. Being with a trained Egyptologist will enhance any visit to Giza with in-depth knowledge of the history of the pyramids and the Sphinx – and the ability to point out hidden gems that are easily overlooked, give detailed explanations and share stories to bring the history alive.3. Choose your hotel wisely. Your Giza experience will start by choosing where to stay. With both luxurious and historic, is a hard-to-beat option when visiting – you might even have a view of the pyramids from your room. Just as good – staying at such close proximity means you’ll avoid Cairo’s infamous traffic.4. Set your alarm for an early arrival. Beat the crowds by arriving early in the morning – while also avoiding the hottest time of day in late morning and afternoon. Summer highs can reach 35ºC, which can be strenuous and potentially unhealthy to explore in.5. Don’t forget to bring water. This is a desert, after all, and all the exploration will probably parch you. While you can buy H2O from on-site vendors, the mark-up is best avoided.6. Dress appropriately. Not just for the weather (light, breathable clothes in the summer, and something to keep you warm in the cooler winter, and sun protection all year), but also to respect the culture. Choose conservative pieces that aren’t too low-cut, short or tight.7. Don’t underestimate a good pair of walking shoes. You will be spending most of the day on your feet so shoes that you know will keep you comfortable for long periods of time, not create discomfort and keep your feet feeling energised to keep going, are crucial.8. Don’t climb the pyramids. This might sound obvious, but it’s a tip to keep you better safe than sorry. Not only is it dangerous, it’s absolutely illegal to climb any of the pyramids – one tourist who was caught in the act received a lifetime ban.9. Watch out for scammers. While most people you come across in Egypt are nothing but friendly, it’s still a good idea to watch out for scammers around the pyramids. They’ll often start by making eye contact then approach to try to take advantage – so best to avoid eye contact in situations where there may be potential scammers around.
We enjoyed visiting the pyramids and the sphinx and we felt safe there its just I wish that the entrance gate and ticking would be more organized
5 stars for the monumental sight!at least the merchants are not as annoying and intrusive as at the pyramids.
A sphinx (/ˈsfɪŋks/ SFINGKS, Ancient Greek: σφίγξ [spʰíŋks], Boeotian: φίξ [pʰíːks], plural sphinxes or sphinges) is a mythical creature with the head of a human and the body of a lion with the wings of a falcon. In Greek tradition, the sphinx has the head of a woman, the haunches of a lion, and the wings of a bird. She is mythicized as treacherous and merciless, and will kill and eat those who cannot answer her riddle. This deadly version of a sphinx appears in the myth and drama of Oedipus.Unlike the Greek sphinx, which was a woman, the Egyptian sphinx is typically shown as a man (an androsphinx (Ancient Greek: ανδρόσφιγξ)). In addition, the Egyptian sphinx was viewed as benevolent but having a ferocious strength similar to the malevolent Greek version. Both were thought of as guardians and often flank the entrances to temples. In European decorative art, the sphinx enjoyed a major revival during the Renaissance. Later, the sphinx image, initially very similar to the original Ancient Egyptian concept, was exported into many other cultures, albeit they are often interpreted quite differently due to translations of descriptions of the originals, and through the evolution of the concept in relation to other cultural traditions.Sphinx depictions are generally associated with architectural structures such as royal tombs or religious temples.
As studied in history book 😋🥰😍 its magnificent and huge. . But those pharaohs are not treated good today because everywhere I see plastic bottles and plastic bag . May be government take necessary action to ban plastic atleast in these areas so that these pyramids will stand few more decades. Horse riding or camel riding is very high , because there is no maximum fare set by government. Like all tourist place , these places also you can see so many fake tourist guide , they simply as of money after they took some pic of you on your mobile phone dnt fall for these. Luckily my friend is Egyptian he saved from all those people. Entry fee for foreigner is only 180egp dnt pay even single pound extra. For entering into pyramids extra 180 or 160 egp as per government fee. Place will close after 4pm. Keep in mind like anyother tourists place here also so many greedy traders, tourist guide even security officers. To enjoy pyramid take some good travel agency help or get a friend from Egypt. Apart from all these, its very good experience.
The Sphinx is an amazing historical monument in Giza and its amazing that its still standing to this day. My only disappointment about coming here is the harassment by locals on trying to scam me as well as the fact that the complex is not isolated in the middle of the desert as youd imagine it to be. The fact that there is a KFC and Pizza Hut almost directly behind you says a lot about how the city has stretched out all the way to the pyramids. Such a shame, but still definitely a must visit!
Its extremely disappointing to see this monument being defaced by so called renovations... When we do this we are destroying and covering up history. Leave this monument as it stands so It can be studdied.
